Seriously, this cleaning hack will get you out of so many sticky situations…see what I did there…😉
Few things make a parent’s heart sink faster than discovering Silly Putty or other sticky substances squished into a couch cushion, favorite hoodie, blanket, or pair of leggings. The good news? You usually do not need to throw the item away.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to remove Silly Putty from fabric is with 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). It helps break down the sticky oils in the putty so it lifts away from the fibers instead of smearing deeper into the material.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get your fabric looking clean again.

Why Rubbing Alcohol Works
Silly Putty is made with silicone polymers and oils that cling stubbornly to fabric fibers. Water alone usually will not remove it.
70% rubbing alcohol helps:
- Break down the oily residue
- Loosen the putty from the fibers
- Make scraping and blotting easier
- Remove leftover stains after the bulk of the putty is gone
The 70% version is often ideal because it evaporates a little slower than higher concentrations, giving it more time to work into the mess.

What You’ll Need
Isopropyl alcohol (70%)
- Butter knife, spoon, or dull scraper
- Cotton balls, cloth, or paper towel
- Old toothbrush (optional)
- Dish soap or laundry detergent
- Warm water
Step-by-Step: Removing Silly Putty From Fabric
1. Remove as Much Putty as Possible
Before adding any liquid, gently scrape off as much Silly Putty as you can using a dull knife or spoon.
Try not to rub it further into the fabric.
Tip:
If the putty is very soft, place the fabric in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes first. This hardens the putty and makes it easier to peel away.

2. Test the Rubbing Alcohol First
Before treating the stain, test the rubbing alcohol on a hidden area of the fabric.
Some delicate fabrics or dyes may react poorly to alcohol.
Wait a few minutes and check for:
- Color fading
- Fabric damage
- Discoloration
If everything looks good, continue.
3. Apply 70% Rubbing Alcohol
Pour a moderate amount of rubbing alcohol onto a cloth or cotton ball and dab it directly onto the remaining Silly Putty residue. For tougher spots (like you’ll see in my video) you can saturate the area directly.
Let it sit for about 2-5 minutes.
You should notice the putty beginning to soften and loosen. If it’s starting to feel slimy, you’re doing it right!
4. Gently Scrape and Blot
Use your scraper or cloth to lift away the softened putty.
You may need to repeat the alcohol application several times for larger messes.
Avoid aggressive scrubbing, especially on delicate fabrics.
For textured materials like couches or carpets, or thicker silly putty accidents, an old toothbrush can help loosen residue from the fibers. I used a medium bristle toothbrush and it worked perfectly.
5. Wash the Area
Once the Silly Putty is gone, wash the area with warm water and a little dish soap or laundry detergent to remove any remaining oily residue.
If the item is machine washable:
- Launder as usual
- Air dry first to ensure the stain is fully gone before using high heat
- If stain is not gone, use a stain remover and wash again
Heat can set any leftover residue permanently.
Can You Use This Method on Couches and Carpets?
Yes. This method works well on:
- Clothing
- Blankets
- Upholstery
- Carpets
- Fabric car seats
Just be careful not to oversaturate furniture cushions or carpet padding.
Blot rather than soak.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using Hot Water First
Hot water can make the putty smear and spread.
Scrubbing Aggressively
This can push the putty deeper into the fibers.
Putting the Fabric in the Dryer Too Soon
Always make sure the stain is completely gone first.
Alternative Methods That Also Work
If you do not have rubbing alcohol on hand, here are a few other commonly used methods:
Ice Cubes or Freezer Method
Hardening the Silly Putty can make it easier to chip off before treating the residue.
White Vinegar
Some people use warm vinegar to help loosen the residue, though it is often less effective than rubbing alcohol.
WD-40
WD-40 can break down sticky residue, but it may leave an oily stain that requires extra washing afterward.
Hand Sanitizer
Many hand sanitizers contain alcohol and can work in a pinch.
Dish Soap and Baking Soda
This combination can sometimes help remove leftover oily residue after the main putty is removed.
Goo Gone
A sticky residue remover like Goo Gone may help with stubborn spots, though it should always be spot-tested first.
Final Thoughts
Silly Putty in fabric may look disastrous at first, but it is usually fixable with a little patience and some 70% rubbing alcohol.
The key is to:
- Remove as much putty as possible first
- Break down the residue with alcohol
- Wash thoroughly afterward
Most stains come out completely with a couple rounds of treatment, even on heavily textured fabrics.
